Map and location

How to get there

  • The metro does not reach Urca directly, so you will need to combine it with a bus.

    • Take Metro Line 1 or Line 2 and get off at Botafogo Station.
    • Follow the signs for “Ônibus Integração” (Exit E – Pasteur).
    • Take the metro integration bus (Line 513 – Botafogo ↔ Urca).
    • Get off at the stop in front of UNIRIO University or directly at the cable car square.
  • This is the most affordable option, although it can be slightly slower:

    From Copacabana / Ipanema:

    • Look for bus lines 518 or 519. They stop very close to the entrance.

    From Downtown (Centro):

    • Bus line 107 (Central ↔ Urca) is the most direct option and passes through much of Rio’s historic area before reaching Av. Pasteur.
  • Walking is an excellent option if you are staying in nearby neighborhoods such as Botafogo or Flamengo.

    From Botafogo (closest point)

    • Approx. 20–30 minutes walk (about 2 km).
    • Walk toward Botafogo Beach and look for the start of Av. Pasteur.
    • Continue along the sidewalk next to the Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro, a pleasant, tree-lined area.
    • Walk straight ahead, passing historic and military buildings (such as the Naval War School).
    • Av. Pasteur leads directly to Praça General Tibúrcio, where you will see the Sugarloaf entrance at number 520.

    From Copacabana (Leme)

    • A longer walk of around 45–55 minutes.
    • Cross Túnel Novo, which connects Copacabana with Botafogo.
    • Note: Walking through the tunnel is possible but noisy and polluted.
    • After exiting the tunnel, go down Lauro Müller Street (near RioSul Shopping Mall).
    • Turn onto Av. Venceslau Brás and connect to Av. Pasteur.
    • Follow the avenue all the way to Urca.
  • f you decide to drive, keep in mind that Urca is a residential and military area, so street parking is very limited and strictly enforced.

Parking options near Av. Pasteur, 520:

    • Public Parking at the Square (Praça General Tibúrcio)
    • Nearby Shopping Malls (Safest Option)
    • Private Parking on Av. Pasteur

Tips to make the most of your visit

- Arrive early or near sunset: Early visits offer fewer crowds and clearer views, while sunset hours provide the most dramatic scenery over Rio and Guanabara Bay.

- Check the weather before booking: Visibility can be affected by clouds or rain. Checking the forecast helps ensure the best panoramic views from the cable car and viewpoints.

- Wear comfortable shoes: Expect walking between viewpoints, stairs, and uneven paths at Morro da Urca and the Sugarloaf summit.

- Bring water and sun protection: Most areas are outdoors and Rio’s climate is warm year-round. Water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are highly recommended.
